SPIEGEL: The terrorists who committed the Madrid train bombings were Moroccan immigrants, while the London suicide bombers were born in England, loved to play cricket and worked with handicapped children. Has al-Qaida succeeded in infecting the children of Europe's immigrant generations?

Schily: This is by no means a new development. The attacks on the Paris Metro in the 1990s were committed by members of the local Muslim community, immigrants from the Maghreb region of North Africa. The terrorists who committed the 2003 Istanbul attacks were locals, that is, Turks. And when filmmaker Theo van Gogh was murdered in the Netherlands last year, the murderer and his supporters were also part of the Muslim community. But it is extremely worrisome that Europe's immigrant generation is producing terrorist groups that are least ideologically related to al-Qaida.
